The Hillary Clinton of Zimbabwe: Bobby Mugabe won’t let go
Rumors ran rampant throughout Zimbabwe and across the globe when ruling officials stated that a power-sharing agreement had been reached between “the Once and Future President” Robert Mugabe of the Zanu-PF party and his chief rival, Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Speculation as to what such a power-sharing deal may hold has been varied, with most people suggesting Mugabe would maintain the post of President while Tsvangirai could perhaps acquire a Prime Minister post, and Tsvangirai would also get to appoint MDC officials to the cabinet.
However, the speculation proved pointless as South African President Thabo Mbeki– whom has been acting as an intermediary between Mugabe and the opposition– denied the rumors that any power-sharing deal had actually been signed off on. He says that a Zanu-PF draft did not give Tsvangirai a formal position and was thus beign revised, and a similar MDC draft was not suitable to Zanu-PF.
It appears that Zimbabwe’s President is utterly unwilling to relinquish any power to the opposition, proving once again that the former anti-colonialist has become a dictator in his own rights.
