Veepstakes: Back to the Drawing Board
Senator Jim Webb of Virginia removed himself from the race for the Democratic Vice Presidential nomination when it became clear the Obama camp was favoring him.
After Obama’s campaign asked Webb to let Obama’s people run a background check, Webb either realized he had something embarrassing in his past he’d rather not have made public or he suddenly got cold feet and decided he wasn’t up for putting his family through the White House.
Regardless, it is now back to the drawing board for the Obama camp, as Webb was the first possibly VP candidate reported to have been asked for a background check.
I have always said that next in line after Webb should be Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Unfortunately for her, she’s a woman, so the most recent issue of Time listed her after Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. I’m not denying that Kaine would be a good choice and would help Obama take Virginia, but I really thought Webb was the better Virginian, and for me it was a “Webb or Sebelius” mentality. So now that Webb is out, Sebelius should be in.
