Hillary Clinton and the Glass Cieling
For all the talk and speculation, we will never really know for sure what led to Hillary Clinton’s failed bid for the presidency. Senator Clinton’s vote in favor of the Iraq War during her term could have been the deciding factor in her loss to Obama, despite the fact that Obama was not a member of the Senate at the time. During the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton herself occasionally mentioned glass ceilings and how she would succeed in breaking them, but we can never know for sure if she ever faced one. Undoubtedly there were those who, when the contest narrowed to Clinton and Obama, chose the man because they were unwilling to accept a female president. However, Clinton maintained leads over Obama in opinion polls as well as delegates throughout much of the early primary season. When it was down to Obama versus Clinton for the nomination, the race was not merely “man versus woman” nor “black versus white,” but rather “outsider versus insider.”
